How I Switched to Waxing at Home & Never Looked Back

For six years, I spent a lot of money on salon waxing. It was convenient, but the costs added up. Then, the pandemic hit, and I had no choice but to find an alternative. After much research, trial, and error, I finally found the perfect solution: hot waxing at home with hot beans.
I’ve been using them for three years, and I wish I had discovered them sooner. So today, I’m sharing my experience and tips so you can skip the mistakes and go straight to smooth, salon-quality results at home!
Why I Love Hot Waxing at Home
✔ Cost-Effective – No more expensive salon visits. One pack of high-quality wax beans lasts multiple sessions.
✔ Portable & Easy to Use—I bought a silicone wax heater. It’s lightweight, collapsible, and perfect for home or travel.
✔ More Hygienic – Hot waxing at home ensures better cleanliness. In salons, there’s always a risk of hygiene standards. At home, no questionable tools!
✔ Less Painful & More Effective – Unlike traditional strip waxing, hard wax beans grip only the hair, not your skin, reducing pain.
✔ Quick & Convenient—There is no need to book an appointment. Just heat, apply, and remove—it takes minutes!
What You Need:
- High-quality wax beans (don’t go cheap—good wax makes a big difference)
- A wax heater (I use a collapsible silicone one)
- A silicone spatula or popsicle stick
- Disposable gloves
- Alcohol & cotton pads (for cleaning)
- Baby powder (helps the wax stick better to the hair, not your skin)
- After-wax spray or soothing lotion
Disclaimer
⚠️ What works for me may not work for you. These wax beans suit my skin type, but everyone’s skin reacts differently. I recommend trying different brands to find what works best for you. Always do a patch test before applying wax to larger areas to avoid irritation.
⚠️ Safety First! This procedure is delicate, and you need to pay close attention. Always read the label and follow the instructions carefully. Handle hot wax with caution to avoid burns on yourself and your materials.
I once tried coffee-scented wax beans because they smelled amazing! But the downside was that they were too dark, making it harder to see where to pull.
Pro Tip: Choose bright-coloured wax beans instead of dark ones. If you have dark hair (which most of us do), it’s harder to see where the wax is when removing it.
As for waxing, it’s generally recommended to avoid waxing before or immediately after your shower because your pores are open, which can lead to irritation. Always make sure to follow proper aftercare to avoid any discomfort or infections.
Microwavable Wax? Not Recommended!
You might see microwavable wax as an option, but I don’t recommend it. Here’s why:
⚠️ Wax gets cold too fast – Walking to your bedroom or bathroom might make the wax already hard.
⚠️ Risk of accidents – Hot wax can spill while transporting it, causing burns or a huge mess.
Using a dedicated wax heater keeps the temperature consistent and safe.
Step-by-Step: How Waxing at Home
1. Prep Your Equipment & Space
- Clean your wax heater and spatula before use.
- Never share your waxing tools, even with family members.
- Find a comfortable, private space to do the procedure.
2. Prep Your Skin
- Make sure your skin is clean and dry before waxing.
- Apply a bit of baby powder—this helps the wax stick to your hair, not your skin.
3. Heat the Wax Beans
- Plug in your heater and pour enough beans for the area you plan to wax.
- Wait for the wax to melt into a smooth, honey-like consistency.
- Don’t overheat! If the wax is too hot, it can burn your skin. If it’s too cold, it won’t spread properly.
4. Apply the Wax
- Use a thin layer and spread it in the direction of hair growth.
- Let the wax cool and harden slightly (but not completely).
5. Remove the Wax
- Hold your skin taut with one hand.
- Pull the wax quickly and firmly in the opposite direction of hair growth.
- Don’t hesitate—fast removal = less pain!
6. Soothe Your Skin
- Wipe off any leftover wax with a cotton pad soaked in oil.
- Apply an after-wax spray or aloe vera gel to calm your skin.
- Avoid hot showers or exfoliation for at least 24 hours.

Final Thoughts
Waxing at home has saved me so much money and time, and the results are just as good as the salon. If you’ve considered trying it, I highly recommend investing in a good wax heater and high-quality beans.
And if you can, do it with a friend—it makes the process even easier!
If you’re eager to learn more, get professional, or even turn this into a side hustle, consider getting a certification in waxing. It’s a great way to perfect your skills and potentially earn money!
